Journalism

Journalism Experience

Before moving into academia, I spent more than seven years working as a journalist and editor across print, business, environmental and multimedia journalism.

My journalism career gave me experience across the newsroom, from reporting and feature writing to editing, news production and multimedia journalism. I worked on a range of beats, including environment, business and commerce, finance, politics and international affairs, while also taking on editorial and leadership responsibilities.

Newsroom Experience

The Nation

At The Nation, I worked across reporting and editorial roles, including Women’s Edition In-charge, Assistant Editor for S+ / Money Plus, and reporting on business, commerce and environmental issues.

My work involved reporting, editing, developing stories and working with journalists and contributors across different sections of the publication.

Daily Sun International

As Multimedia News Editor, I worked across news production and digital journalism, bringing together editorial judgement, reporting and emerging multimedia practices.

This experience developed my understanding of how news organisations adapt their workflows and storytelling practices as journalism moves across platforms.

Reporting & Specialised Journalism

My journalism experience includes reporting on:

  • Environment and climate-related issues
  • Business and financial affairs
  • Politics and public policy
  • International affairs
  • Women and social issues
  • Conflict and security
  • Digital and multimedia journalism

I have also worked as a war journalist and financial reporter, experiences that strengthened my ability to work with complex information, tight deadlines and challenging reporting environments.

Journalism, Teaching & Research

My professional journalism experience continues to shape my academic work.

In the classroom, I draw on newsroom experience to help students understand the practical realities behind journalistic decisions, including finding stories, assessing sources, working with evidence, writing under deadline and considering audiences.

My research similarly examines questions that emerged from my professional experience, particularly the changing nature of journalism, digital transformation, data journalism, environmental reporting and journalism education.

I see journalism practice, teaching and research as connected parts of my professional journey.

Industry & Professional Engagement

I have continued to connect journalism education with the industry through guest speakers, professional collaborations and practical learning opportunities. I have brought journalists and media practitioners from organisations including ABC News, SBS News and Nature into teaching contexts, allowing students to engage directly with contemporary journalism practice.

I have also worked with external organisations and contributed to professional training, including an UNDP collaboration as an external trainer.

From Newsroom to Classroom

My transition from journalism to academia did not mean leaving journalism behind.

It gave me a different way of examining the profession.

Today, I bring the experience of the newsroom into my teaching and research, while my academic work allows me to critically examine the technologies, institutions, practices and social responsibilities shaping journalism.
